Back-to-School 2020

School starts for students tomorrow. At my school we were told ~1,000 students will return for face-to-face learning. I’ve had five years of greeting a new batch of students, but this year I won’t be there.

I’ve been anxious all day. Nervous. Too much time on social media absorbing everyone else’s anxiety and nervousness.

I’m so worried for my friends and coworkers going back. I’m so worried for students and their families.

Already school re-openings have resulted in more than 2,500 infections in 44 states, and that was as of August 19! Why does anyone in Florida think things will end up differently? Or perhaps they just don’t care. Probably a mix of both.

I don’t wish those damn unlucky lottery tickets on anyone.

Reporting

But we know it’s going to happen. And we don’t know that the district, county, or state will be completely honest about things as they happen.

With that, Pinellas County folks looking for a safe place to post unsafe conditions can post them here. If you are in Hillsborough County, you can post here. You can post anonymously.

Or if you learn about a Covid case at your school, you can anonymously post that here. (Link good for the entire U.S.)

Accountability

It’s up to us to hold our district, counties, and states accountable. Even one infection and one lost life due to unsafe reopening is too much!

Many folks may be going back to brick-and-mortar learning, but that doesn’t mean the fight for safe(r) schools is over.
