Bad Poet 2026: Day 18

The Prompt

Today, Katie guided us to write a bird poem. Partially because she has been so inspired by Duke Riley’s Fly By Night art, made with the cooperation of pigeons.

The Poem

a pane of silicon dioxide
can’t hold back their song

jubilant about
pops of red on green

holly candy
that’s remained
through winter

a flurry of motion
hopping branch to branch
sampling the wares

pops of red
under brown coats

flashes of yellow
on tails

singing songs
loud enough to
pull me outside

A photogenic robin.
Photograph by me.
A cedar waxwing looking away.
Photograph by me.

Processing

My home office desk faces a window that looks out on my back yard. Fortunately, there’s a thread of forest back there, and the holly has been vibrant with its pops of red. The birds were particularly cheerful today, and the temperature was a moderate 65F. They drew me outside and I snapped some pictures. There may have been some other birds out there, but I mainly saw robins and cedar waxwings.

Oh, how I’ve missed robins, and I didn’t really even know it. They were a very rare sight when I lived in Florida. And I don’t think I ever saw a cedar waxwing before I lived here, though I think their range covers Florida. They are really lovely birds.

What’s your favorite bird? Why is it your favorite?
