Bad Poet 2026: Day 20

  • by

The Prompt

Today we were guided to write a burning haibun. It’s kind of like a blackout poem, times three.

The Poem(s)

a warm breeze floats in
on chirps of frogs
unthawing after
the freeze of winter

looking past mirrors
through panes of glass
to see the universe
blue, orange, white stars

twinkling lights tangled
in a cosmic dance
nebulae and galaxies
playing disco ball
behind the scenes

a warm breeze
chirps of frogs
after the freeze

past mirrors
through panes
see the universe
stars

lights tangled
cosmic dance
galaxies
disco ball

warm
chirps of frogs
after the freeze

mirrors
panes
universe
stars

tangled dance

disco ball

Processing

I went to a stargazing event tonight, hosted by my city’s parks & rec department. Some folks who are part of an astronomy club shared their fancy telescopes and we looked at … well … lots of things.

I think I like the first round of this poem, but I do tend to be an over-explainer. Which round of this burning haibun do you like best?
