I chose the “reasons to write” prompt out of a broader list.
It reads:
A lot of my choices
have a contrarian vibe
Middle school football team?
Because a boy in my grade
said girls couldn’t
(At first) not having children?
Because I didn’t want to sacrifice
my youth like my mom
Not smoking cigarettes?
Because I remembered the force,
stinky kisses of family
Even PhD school was a little
“fuck you” aimed in the direction
of my ex-
and until now …
unwritten memories
and ideas
Unprocessed thoughts
Waiting to be transferred
and transformed
So I can stop living life by
comparison and competition
And just live
What better reason to create?
