Getting Better

  • by

I went to rollerskating class again this morning. I fell less times than last week. I’m getting more comfortable keeping one foot off the ground. I can go a little faster. I can step onto the rink a little easier. Progress already!

Another adult joined the class briefly, then left for the sidelines. So I was among the kids again. But I’m learning a lot. I was thinking about doing private lessons, because I figured I could get into the harder stuff faster without the little kids. But I realized, I’m learning quite a lot. Right now I need to work on the basics right now, and I’m getting that. So I’m going to stick with the $8 version for awhile longer.

And I won a hedgehog in class! I’ll bet they don’t give you hedgehogs in the private lessons. I think I’m going to make him my skating mascot.

The better lesson is the open skating after the class. There I’m able to try out some of the techniques I learned during the class. It’s also excellent practice for maneuverability, because there’s always the chance someone could dart out in front of you or fall down. You’ve got to be able to adapt. And since I ultimately want to ride out in real life, I’ll need those skills.

While skating during the open skate, one of the more advanced skaters who was in another class told me I was doing a good job. One of the instructors helping with a different class said he was impressed I could do nearly all the things my instructor was doing. He thought that was good considering I haven’t really done this in 30 years. These compliments are coupled with a lady giving me a high-five when I was practicing in a parking lot the other day. The accolades just keep coming!

And it was still fun this week. Not falling was definitely more fun…
