What an incredibly monumental week in the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS).
Earlier in the week, love won when the Affordable Healthcare Act (i.e. Obamacare) was upheld as Constitutional by the Supreme Court in a 6-3 decision. This decision allowed millions of Americans to keep their affordable health insurance, where they wouldn’t have been able to without this law.
Today, SCOTUS agreed that gay Americans are guaranteed a Constitutional right to marry. All Americans in all 50 states now have the right to marry their loves.
In response to the Charleston shooting last week, state governments have been removing the Confederate flag from their buildings, and many more companies have taken to removing products containing this symbol of hatred and bigotry.
The United States is finally making progress in putting itself on the right side of history on some of these issues. We still have a long way to go to ensure all Americans enjoy their basic human rights, but we’re getting there. Battles have been won, but the war still rages.
But we can still take time to celebrate the victories.
