Day 2 Poem: July 5

I sit
drinking my coffee
looking out my back window
at the birds and the lush green
a big difference from last night

I sat
watching my bonfire
watching the rockets’ red glare
all around my neighborhood
booms, screeches, laughter

I imagine
huddling under a desk
closing my eyes in fear
at booms, flares, rockets
a big difference from my childhood

I imagine
playing a game
wondering: fireworks or gunshots?
not only on the 4th
all year long, taking too many

I imagine
looking at the sky in awe
listening and knowing: fireworks
all around the world
no more fear of violence
